Early intervention

Early intervention speech therapy for little ones

Gentle, play-based communication support for babies, toddlers and preschoolers — with the strategies to help your child every day.

The early years are a powerful window for communication. Early intervention speech therapy gives babies, toddlers and preschoolers gentle, play-based support — and gives you the strategies to help your child every day.

Why early support matters

Children's brains develop rapidly in the first five years, which makes this the most effective time to support communication. Rather than a “wait and see” approach, early intervention means acting on your instincts early — when support is gentlest and most effective. If your child is on track, that's wonderful reassurance; if they need a hand, you've given them the best possible start.

Signs early support could help

  • Few or no words by around 18 months, or not combining words by two
  • Hard to understand, or frustrated at not being understood
  • Not following simple instructions or pointing to share interest
  • Limited eye contact, gesture or back-and-forth interaction
  • Lost words or skills they previously had
  • A gut feeling that something isn't quite right

How early intervention works with us

We keep it warm and play-based — because play is how young children learn. Much of our work is coaching you, since you're with your child far more than any therapist could be. We weave strategies into everyday moments like mealtimes, bath time and story time, so communication grows naturally through the day. We draw on evidence-based approaches such as Hanen-style parent coaching and focused stimulation.

Early support is changing in Australia. From October 2026, the new Thriving Kids program will become a key pathway for early childhood support for children aged 8 and under. We're helping local families understand what it means — read our guide.

Early intervention often overlaps with language development and speech sounds. We'll help you focus on what matters most for your child right now.

Common questions

Isn't it better to wait and see if my child catches up?

Many late talkers do catch up, but it's hard to predict who will, and early support is gentle and low-risk. Checking in early means your child gets help sooner if they need it — and reassurance if they don't.

How young is too young for speech therapy?

It's never too early. For babies and toddlers, early intervention focuses heavily on coaching parents and building communication through play and everyday routines.

What will early intervention actually look like?

Warm, play-based sessions in familiar settings, with plenty of practical strategies you can use between visits. For very young children, much of the work happens through you, the parent.
