Neuro-affirming therapy

Neuro-affirming speech therapy that honours your child

Therapy that follows your child's lead, values every way they communicate, and builds skills without ever asking them to mask who they are.

Neuro-affirming speech therapy honours how your child naturally communicates, rather than trying to make them appear “typical.” It's not a buzzword for us — it shapes every session.

What neuro-affirming means

Neurodiversity is the simple idea that brains naturally vary, and that differences like autism, ADHD and language differences are part of human diversity — not problems to be erased. A neuro-affirming speech pathologist works with your child's neurology, not against it, building genuine communication while protecting their confidence, wellbeing and sense of self.

What we move away from

  • Forcing eye contact as a goal in itself
  • Discouraging stimming (it often helps a child regulate and focus)
  • Treating spoken words as “better” than AAC, sign or gesture
  • Compliance-based drills that prioritise looking typical over feeling okay
  • Teaching children to mask who they are

What we do instead

  • Follow your child's lead and build on their genuine interests and strengths
  • Honour all communication — words, signs, devices, gestures and behaviour all count
  • Focus on connection and being understood, not appearing “normal”
  • Presume competence — we assume there's always more going on inside than we can see
  • Involve your child in their own goals wherever possible
Will my child still make progress? Absolutely. Neuro-affirming isn't “hands-off” — it's skilled, evidence-based therapy with a different compass. We still build vocabulary, clearer speech, sentences and literacy; we simply do it in a way that says you are not a problem to be fixed.

Especially for autistic children and AAC users

Our approach fits naturally with AAC and communication support and with supporting autistic children to communicate authentically. We never ask a child to leave part of who they are at the door.

Common questions

Is neuro-affirming therapy still “real” therapy?

Yes. It's skilled, evidence-based speech pathology — we still build communication, language and literacy skills. The difference is that we do it in a way that respects your child's identity and wellbeing rather than trying to make them appear typical.

Do you support stimming and AAC?

Yes. We treat stimming as a valid, often helpful form of self-regulation, and we embrace AAC, sign and gesture as genuine communication — never as a last resort.

Why does a neuro-affirming approach matter?

Research and the lived experience of autistic adults both point the same way: pressure to mask is linked to poorer wellbeing. Therapy that respects a child's identity protects their confidence and mental health while still building real skills.
