A new system is coming, but your child's development is happening right now. Here's how to prepare — and, more importantly, how to keep supporting your child in the meantime.
1. Act on your instincts early
The single biggest theme of the Thriving Kids reform is moving away from “wait and see.” If you have a niggle about your child's talking, understanding, play or connection, act on it now. Early support is gentle and effective — and if everything's on track, it's lovely reassurance.
2. Start support now if your child needs it
You don't need to wait for the new system to begin. If your child would benefit from speech pathology today, you can access it through NDIS, Medicare or privately. Progress made now is progress banked — the early years are precious.
3. Keep good records
Whatever system your child moves through, useful things to keep include: notes on milestones and concerns, any assessment or therapy reports, and a simple record of the supports your child receives. Good records make any future assessment or transition smoother.
4. Build your own skills
Thriving Kids puts real emphasis on empowering families — because you're your child's most important communication partner. Simple daily habits (narrating your day, following your child's lead in play, reading together, giving time to respond) make a genuine difference. A speech pathologist can coach you in strategies tailored to your child.
5. Stay informed from trusted sources
There's a lot of noise and uncertainty around this reform. Stick to official sources for the facts, and lean on professionals who can translate the policy into what it means for your child.
